From her beacon-hand<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>&#8220;Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!&#8221; cries she<br \/>\n<\/em><em>With silent lips. &#8220;Give me your tired, your poor,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>I lift my lamp beside the golden door!&#8221;\u2028\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Emma Lazarus (1849-1887), a Jewish American author, wrote this sonnet in 1883 to help raise funds to build\u00a0a pedestal and install the Statue of Liberty.\u00a0The poem was\u00a0engraved on that pedestal in 1903, where it remains today. Esther Schor, who wrote a biography of Lazarus, told <em>The New York Times<\/em> in 2011, &#8220;Emma Lazarus was the first American to make any sense of this statue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Within a day or so of President Trump&#8217;s executive order on immigration \u00a0(1\/25\/17), the words of this poem began appearing\u00a0across the Internet.
