From the time I was five, I could run through their names. Fred, Ted, Frank, Karl, Ross \u2013 in order, in a flash.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2431\" src=\"http:\/\/www.annefocke.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/hand-scan-color-3-crop-644x771.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.annefocke.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/hand-scan-color-3-crop-644x771.jpeg 644w, http:\/\/www.annefocke.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/hand-scan-color-3-crop-251x300.jpeg 251w, http:\/\/www.annefocke.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/hand-scan-color-3-crop-768x919.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m at a loss for how to count them now.<\/p>\n<p>My oldest brother Fred \u2013 Alfred Bosworth Focke, Jr. \u2013 died on Saturday, November 25, 2017. He died peacefully, at home, with his wife Kay and daughter Julie by his side. I&#8217;m grateful it was, as far as anyone could tell, gentle and pain free. Julie told me afterward, &#8220;It was as though he quietly faded and then was gone.&#8221; He was 82.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022<\/p>\n<p>Yet even as I absorb the news, the self underneath the sadness knows I still have five brothers. Four I can see and touch and talk with, but the fifth remains, in memory making a full hand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2326\" src=\"http:\/\/www.annefocke.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/cropped-9099-Logo-red_D-nick-square-smaller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"35\" height=\"35\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the last 67 years it has taken all the fingers on one hand to count my brothers.
